ASEEES Expresses Concern on Florida Law Allowing Recording of Classroom
Published on May 17, 2021
ASEEES signed a statement by the Middle East Studies Association expressing concern regarding the Florida bill (HB233) that "threatens to undermine the independence and academic freedom of faculty to teach and research at the state’s publicly funded institutions of higher learning. The bill, which awaits the governor’s signature, allows students to record in classrooms without the consent of their professors... The proposed law, supposedly designed to ensure transparency in the classroom and protect students’ free speech rights, instead constitutes a legislative intrusion that will have a chilling effect on the free exchange of opinions it claims to enhance. The law would have a particularly pernicious effect on students’ abilities to express their views freely in an open environment."
